Inspiration

As an Arizona artist, why no Southwestern subjects?

Maybe being around so much of it for so long, I just never developed an interest or appreciation for it. I really wanted to try something different. The thought of painting what other people expected never really appealed to me.

What inspires you?

Really it’s a particular line that seems to flow through so many things. I see it in the human form and I see it in the natural environment. Much later I would learn that this is called "The Divine Proportion". Color and the dynamics and interaction of color are very important to me.

What are you trying to achieve through your work?

I’m trying to tell a somewhat complicated story while keeping it simple. I’m also trying to create a sense of movement within the framework of a composition. I strive to engineer this result into my art regardless of what the subject is.
